Steam on the Underground Mortons Media Group 2015

"This special publication offers not one, but three, major stories about London and indeed Britain’s ground-breaking railway history and heritage.
Firstly, when Britain launched the world’s first underground city line, in the form of the Metropolitan Railway in 1863, it set a standard for others to follow. And for the first few decades of its operation, steam, not electric, traction hauled trains of both passengers and freight through the tunnels.
Secondly, the history of steam traction on the Underground is told in full, from those earliest times to 1971. That was when, three years after steam haulage ended on the British Rail network, London Underground dispensed with the services of its last steam locomotives. Thirdly, and most poignantly, it tells the story of how steam returned to the London Underground lines, both above and below the surface.
It began with the original Steam on the Met series, which ran from 1989-2000, and came back with a vengeance in 2013 with a national award-winning series of steam specials to mark the 150th anniversary of the first underground trains."

"One of the biggest events in the calendar of many of Britain’s heritage railways today is their annual Forties or wartime weekends. We often think of the dark days of the first and second world wars as gloomy and depressing, with everything appearing in varying shades of grey.
Yet every summer, our preserved railways become a riot of living colour, as thousands of re-enactors, some with military vehicles and hardware, reprising roles from soldiers to spivs, major generals to music hall entertainers. Hordes of eager visitors alike descend on them, many retrodressed for the big occasion.
Everyone seeks to immerse themselves in reminiscences of those hardest of times when our brave island nation stood, for years alone, for freedom and liberty against tyranny of the worst kind.
In 2016, we are also remembering in the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, the pivotal moment in the Great War, when the tide on the Western Front turned in our favour.
Heritage railways are the perfect linear stages on which to re-create dramas and cameo scenes of a yesteryear society in which the train was still, often by necessity, the first choice of transport for most people."
